As a recently graduated student I have been exposed mainly to IVP Christian books, because UCCF could not possibly dabble in anything else. You begin to get familiar with certain authors. Sometimes however I like to be a little bit naughty and check out other publishers. I remember when I started reading Tim Keller I felt like a kid, reading his comic under his blanket with the power of torch light, the fear of mum or dad catching me in the act.
Recently the material of one Dr Dale Ralph Davis has caught my eye and I have become an admirer of his. I am reading two of his books. The first is his commentary on 1 Kings. Absolutely brilliant. The second is called the Word became Fresh. This is my favorite as it’s about how the Old Testament is so important. He makes it exciting and you can tell he loves it.
Couple of things that encouraged me so far. First he utter reliance on the Holy Spirit to interpret Scripture. I know I am always too quick to turn to the commentaries but Ralph emphasises how we are in need of the Spirit here. I also love his attitude towards the Old Testament and how important it is and how relevant it is in my life.
