This is the continuation of the pierced by the word series, and todays topic is God is the Gospel. John Piper looks at our approach to forgiveness or should I say our attitudes to God’s forgiveness. He asks some interesting questions such as why do people want to have eternal life? He makes a very bold (but accurate) statement, ‘it is possible to want forgiveness and eternal life for reasons that prove you don’t have them.’

You may seek forgiveness to relieve guilt. Maybe it’s because you have been told that God needs to forgive you before you can have good health, the perfect job or a loving spouse.

It matters why you seek forgiveness. You cannot put anything above God. His forgiveness cannot be used as a passage to things you desire more. Why do you want eternal life? To avoid hell? Because there will be no sadness there?

John 17:3 ‘Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.’

Eternal life is all about God (can you see atheme in this series yet?)

So before you make a cup of tea think about the good news. Faith in Jesus Christ does mean we don’t go to hell. It does mean our sin is forgiven. But above all we have a relationship with God. He is central.

About

am Jamie, and I am a Christ follower. I love Jesus but more importantly he loves me and made the ultimate sacrifice of his son so that all the things I have done, and will do, have been forgiven. And now I know God, and I pursue to know him more. Motivated and transformed by his grace I live for God, to glorify him by enjoying him.

A challenging entry! And this statement in particular ‘it is possible to want forgiveness and eternal life for reasons that prove you don’t have them.’ is challenging! At fist it took a while to get my head round it. But you’re right. God is central and we must not put anything before him. How often do we challenge what we think and believe to be the truth?

    James 1v22
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

    Good stuff,
